Some ATM owners going beyond minimal ADA requirements

Between meeting new Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards and converting some Triton ATM machines to be capable of reading EMV smart cards, many ATM machine owners, particularly those who work for financial institutions or credit unions, are instituting wholesale upgrades to their machines to enhance the cash withdrawal experience of customers.

The ADA mandates that ATMs have adequate screen fonts, Braille capabilities and other related enhancements before March. Following the lead of some financial institutions, and in order to remain competitive with them, some credit unions are taking this opportunity to add deposit mechanisms to their machines.

"A lot of financial institutions think that since they have to do this ADA compliance work anyway, they might as well upgrade the technology of their ATMs," Andrew Tilbury, a marketing officer for a technology vendor, told the Credit Union Times. "We're seeing a lot of interest in the technology, but not a sense of urgency yet."

Independent ATM owners, and those merchants who want to buy an ATM machine, are unlikely to offer deposit services on their devices, so they may need to find other means to keep customers engaged with their products. Whether this means instituting other upgrades, such as color screens, or altering their surcharge rates, ATM owners have many options.

While some ATM owners may see long-term enhancements to their machines as paying off in the future, others may prefer to delay these upgrades until absolutely necessary. They may, for example, devote more financial resources toward bolstering security features on their machines. Regardless of specific needs, ATM owners should contact a qualified reseller of Hantle and Hyosung ATM machines to provide them with solutions to meet ADA standards before March.
