Top Washington law enforcement official’s case provides anti-skimming tips

In recent years, credit card thieves have become increasingly sophisticated when it comes to stealing information from consumers. One of the preferred methods is called skimming, a process by which criminals slip small devices over ATM machines, gas station card readers or outdoor ATMs.

This technique has proven so effective that on Tuesday, U.S. Attorney Jenny Durkan announced that her bank account was compromised by criminals. The particular machine that Durkan used contained a hidden camera that recorded her PIN number as she typed it into a keypad. With this method, crooks were able to steal $1,000 from the attorney's account.

"When it happens to you, you really feel victimized and you think, 'Boy, I wish I'd been smarter that time,'" Durkan told reporters following the incident.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), it can be difficult for consumers to spot these devices. As a result, business owners who own an ATM mini bank or Hantel ATM need to take extra steps to inspect these services regularly.

The authorities say business owners should look for anything that looks crooked, damaged or loose. Scratches or adhesive tape residue that wasn't previously present could also be an indicator that a skimmer was installed.

Business owners can choose to post signs that inform consumers on some methods that could reduce their risk for fraud. The FBI advises customers to user their hand to block hidden cameras from capturing their PIN number, and to alert authorities if a card isn't returned from the machine when they hit the "Cancel" button or complete a transaction.

If business owners were considering updating their existing Hyosung ATM or Tranax ATM, they may want to consider purchasing an indoor ATM like an ATM mini bank. This type of machine is protected as it is able to be kept under closer supervision and can fit snugly in small spaces.
