Illinois Bankers Association offers tips for ATM owners
Due to the threat consumers face from identity theft and credit fraud, business owners who choose to provide an outdoor ATM or ATM mini bank for their customers need to take precautions to ensure visitors feel protected when they visit their convenience stores, bars or nightclubs.
This week, the Illinois Bankers Association (IBA) provided some tips for consumers to follow that could help busy owners adjust their ATMs. By reviewing the consumer alert, business owners may be able to make their ATMs more pleasing to customers looking to make quick, safe transactions on the go.
Since the IBA's advisory informs consumers to be wary of ATMs that look suspicious, busy owners may want to take some time out of their busy schedule to perform some basic aesthetic alterations on these important revenue generators. Especially, if they have been in use for some time.
Business owners who rely on their ATMs need to provide this service to ensure the trust of their consumers. For example, a report of a theft made from an on-site ATM machine can be damaging to the reputation of a store – even if the machine is a high-quality Tranax ATM or Triton ATM.
If part of the ATM appears broken or if it is covered in old adhesives once used to attach helpful notices on sales or best practices for customers, the ATM may need to be cleaned or repaired. To remove old adhesives, ATM owners may want to spray the area with WD-40 or use clear tape to clear away any remaining spots. Some home maintenance websites even suggest using nail polish remover, however, for most business owners this may not be the most clean or cost-effective method.
To increase the protection of their customers, business owners can also post signs reminding their clients to follow the IBA's recommendations, such as remembering to throw away bank receipts and double checking to ensure they didn't leave their debit or credit card in the machine.
