ATM machine cleaner clears up theft misunderstanding

At first glance, keen ATM machine owners would assume the worst if they witnessed two individuals tinkering with their Hyosung ATM devices. As one ATM owner and law enforcement officials in Ohio recently found out though, a more detailed investigation can sometimes reveal that the truth is not always as it appears.

Last month, police in Franklin, Ohio, released security footage of what they claimed to be an ATM robbery in progress. The surveillance video showed a man with a clipboard allegedly trying to break into an ATM. He was later joined by a younger man, both of whom used tools provided by the boy to work on the machine.

Afterwards, the man called Franklin police and informed them that he was contracted by the ATM merchant to clean the machine. The boy that police originally thought was the man's accomplice turned out to actually be his grandson. As soon as law enforcement officials verify the story, the incident will be put to rest.

This ordeal brought to light the importance of owners installing high-quality surveillance equipment to monitor their outdoor ATM and ATM mini bank devices. Even then, as this incident shows, a vigilant ATM owner is perhaps the best deterrent to crime.

Had this machine's owner been aware that the ATM was scheduled to be serviced, he or she would not have suspected any wrongdoing when the surveillance video came to light. Even if the maintenance was not expected, a merchant could have approached the two individuals to clarify their actions.

Still, state-of-the-art camera equipment and ATM owners cannot individually monitor machines. They must work together to account for each other's weaknesses in order to effectively prevent theft.
